Live Music Videos: Release Announcement

New Music Videos from Rhythm and Cello

A little while back, we had the pleasure of filming a couple of live music videos at a funky East Van venue called The Juniper Room. We’re thrilled to be able to share them with you now!

All Your Secrets

This first video is an original song called All Your Secrets. The backstory to this one is that a week before we recorded a version of this song in studio with funding from Factor and the Government of Canada, John decided to change the key on me – one with crazy sharps, which was not so cool for cello… But it did sound better – so I reluctantly forgave him and we kept the change for the video too.

Oye Como Va – Santana cover song

This video has a strikingly similar backstory (seriously, this happens almost any time we have a shoot or a recording or an important show!). John felt the arrangement needed a bit of tweaking for the video a couple of days before the shoot. Sadly, I agreed, so we worked out a new layout for the song, and you’re the first ones to hear it! The title is a bit misleading, it’s actually a Santana medley – let us know which Santana song that you love is missing from our arrangement, by posting a comment! We’d love to hear from you!

Thanks again to The Juniper Room for their enthusiasm and stellar work in putting these together for us, and to every single person who filled the room for the filming and brought their energy and love. These videos wouldn’t be what they are without you!

Live Music Video Shoot at the Juniper Room

Rhythm and Cello’s Live Music Video Shoot

This past March found Rhythm and Cello at The Juniper Room in East Van, along with the John Welsh Band, to film a couple of live music videos. This is the first time the two bands have shared the stage, despite John being a member of both – it was sort of like introducing your wife to your mistress…only we’re still not sure which of us has tied the knot 😛

The Juniper Room

The stellar crew at the Juniper Room covered the room with their roving cameras as friends, family and fans filled the room with their energy. Each band played a set for the audience and filmed a song or two, and by the end of the night, the room was hopping. The highlight had to be Courage and John performing their rendition of a crowd-favourate Sir Mix-a-Lot hit from the 90s. We can’t say enough about the funky venue and the guys that looked after us and our fans – we’re looking forward to seeing the final videos and know you’ll enjoy them too!

In case you missed it, here are a few shots from the night. Special thanks to those who passed photos along to us:

Big thanks

We’d like to send out a huge thanks to all of you who came out and helped to make these videos a success! We couldn’t’ have done it without you. Stay tuned for the official video releases in the coming weeks!

FACTOR Grant sends Rhythm and Cello to the studio

FACTOR Grant Funding for Rhythm and Cello!

Rhythm and Cello was recently awarded a Demo Sound Recording Grant courtesy of FACTOR Canada and the Government of Canada. This program funds a portion of the production of a high quality, professional sound recording of one or more tracks, which may be used as a demo and/or released commercially as a single, or E.P.

Studio, here we come!

We couldn’t wait to get into the studio to record two original songs with producer Digory Smallz at Greenhouse Studios. Great times were had by all, and we’re looking forward to sharing the outcome with you! One of our recordings will be featured in CBC Music‘s SEARCHLIGHT Contest beginning March 30, 2015. More details will follow, but your daily vote through April will help to get us noticed!

 A bonus track

While we were at it, we decided to scrape together enough funds to record a cover tune as well. We chose an upbeat song from a beloved Scottish-born Canadian folk singer, David Francey. John and I have both had the pleasure of meeting him and have enjoyed his music over the years. And as with most every song we end up adding to our repertoire, when we came across this one, we thought “That would sound great with a cello.” Luckily I happened to have one, and the rest is history. Stay tuned for their releases!
